Cincinnati
vs
Southern Miss
Dec. 22 / 1 p.m.This definitely might be a case of a team not being as happy with their bowl destination as their opponent. Cincinnati comes into the Papajohns.com Bowl ranked nationally and looking for their tenth win of the season for the first time since 1951. The Bearcats were probably hoping for a Sun Bowl birth, but it wasn't meant to be. Instead they get to face a Southern Miss team in a transition state with Jeff Bower on his way out from the team he's coached for the past 17 years. Bower will be auditioning for his next job after making it clear he isn't done coaching. Brian Kelly of Cincinnati might also be auditioning for a "better" job after the season he's had.
Cincinnati will ride the arm of transfer senior Ben Mauk who led the league in passer efficiency and had 27 touchdown passes. For Southern Miss to have a chance they will have to successfully run the football with Damion Fletcher. I just don't see it happening. These two teams are heading in different directions and this game will only solidify those positions. Mauk will pass all over USM and the Cincy defense will come up with a number of turnovers to roll the Eagles and their lame duck coach.
Line (wagerline.com): Cincinnati -10.5, Total 55.0
