...and that's why they play the game!

Going into Saturday there were 21 undefeated BCS teams. After a crazy afternoon of college football, that number has significantly dwindled. 5 of the top 10 teams in the country fell, the most since October of 2003. 7 previously undefeated teams fell. The top25 is sure to look different on Sunday!

USF knocks off WVU, 21 BCS undefeated teams left

With their stellar defensive effort against the explosive Mountaineer attack, USF has moved into the driver's seat in the Big East. Another big test comes in 2 weeks when they travel to play Rutgers in what could now be a battle of top10 teams.

Remaining undefeated BCS teams going into the weekend and their opponent (picks in red):

ACC
#12 Boston College v Massachusetts
#13 Clemson @ Georgia Tech

Big12
Missouri -BYE-
Kansas -BYE-
#3 Oklahoma @ Colorado
#7 Texas v Kansas State

4 undefeated teams squareoff this weekend with Michigan State going to Wisconsin and Cal traveling up to Oregon. I look for there to still be 18 undefeated BCS teams at the end of the weekend

  23. Michigan
  24. Penn State
  25. Florida State

Quick Thoughts from the Weekend

  • Nebraska might not be as good as we thought after they need a dropped TD to hold on against...Ball State
  • UF is really good, but the young team might not be ready to go on the road in the SEC and win a really big game
  • Is Miami (and thus Oklahoma) that good, or is Texas A&M really that bad?
  • USC won't be tested until late October
  • October 6th will decide the National Title contender to play USC
    • OU/Texas in the Red River Shootout
    • UF @ LSU
  • The best QB in the nation plays on the east coast, and its not Brian Brohm. Time for Matt Ryan and BC to start getting a lot more attention

LSU is an 800lbs gorilla...

The LSU Tigers absolutely destroyed formerly 9th ranked Virginia Tech in Tiger Stadium last Saturday, setting off the media on a great debate about who the best team in the country is. The best sound clip of the week is on this subject, and comes to us from the Paul Finebaum show. Listen here...

I'm not quite ready to hand LSU the BCS title, but if I were to vote this week:

1 LSU
2 Southern Cal
3 Oklahoma
4 Florida
5 West Virginia
6 Georgia Tech
7 Wisconsin
8 Texas
9 Ohio State
10 Louisville

What to Watch Week 2

Games this week look a little more exciting than last week's somewhat light slate of top matchups. Michigan losing last week takes some of the shine off of their game against Oregon, but I'll still be tuning in to see if the Wolverines can turn things around. These are my picks for top games of the week on the tube

Miami, Fla. @ Oklahoma Noon ABC
Nebraska @ Wake Forest Noon ESPN

Oregon @ Michigan 3:30 p.m. ABC
Boise State @ Washington 3:30 p.m. FSN Regional

South Carolina @ Georgia 5:45 p.m. ESPN2
Notre Dame @ Penn State 6:00 p.m. ESPN
BYU @ UCLA 6:30 p.m. Versus
TCU @ Texas 7:00 p.m. FSN

USF @ Auburn 9:00 p.m. ESPN2
Virginia Tech @ LSU 9:15 p.m. ESPN

Thoughts on Week 1

The season just started, and we've already eliminated a team from the national title chase. Sorry, Michigan, but you're done. Of course, everyone knows UM lost to Appalachian State in the Big House in week 1, so no need to get into that.

Who impressed?

Oklahoma, the Big 3 of the Big East (UL, RU, WVU), Georgia, Boise State, Georgia Tech, Wisconsin, and LSU. USC crushed Idaho and the game was never in doubt, but they just didn't look as impressive as they have in previous seasons. We'll really see how good USC is when they play Nebraska on the 15th.

Who looked bad?
Notre Dame got destroyed by GT
Texas squeaked by Arkansas State
Lloyd Carr and the entire Michigan team (except Mike Hart) losing to Appalachian State is just inexcusable
Lou Holtz (please bring back Trev Alberts, ESPN)
